I’m a Greedy Bastard and I hate Politics…….

So today I wasn’t in that great of a mood and made the following comment on one of the many IRC channels I hang out on, “Today is a shitty day”, which then ensued a long debate about Obama, Politics in general, and how I am a greedy bastard.

I can honestly say that when it comes to my well being, my wallet, ergo my bank account, my family and myself come first and foremost. So in that regard YES I am a greedy bastard. I didn’t drudge myself through 4 years of college, rack up a huge student loan bill, to turn around and be civil about paying taxes for programs such as welfare and social security, or any other government funded program that basically help perpetuates the lazy and doesn’t force them to change.

I understand the need for taxes, however I just can NOT get over having to pay taxes for a majority of things that will never benefit my wellbeing. Yes I know I am being selfish and narrow minded, but isn’t that the American way? I was brought up in a family that if you wanted something you worked for it. I started working the day I turned 15 and was legally able to work. I worked that maximum hours I could possibly work even while I was going to school. I honestly don’t know where my hard headed mentality comes from, however I have strong beliefs, and that lazy people, basically ones that do not ever put forth the effort to better themselves shouldn’t benefit from my hard working, motivated self worth.

I would love to NOT have to pay taxes, I would love to be able to take every single dime I earn and spend it on my hobbies, my gadgets. Anyone who knows me I am not great with my money, I don’t save my money all that well, and when I get it, I’ll spend it on one of my many hobbies, whether it be skiing, a new cell phone, a new mp3 player, a new piece of home theater gear, a snowmobile trailer, you name it, I’ll find a way to spend it. I am the total opposite of frugal when it comes to money.

Everyone says that because I am the way I am with my money, and my spending habits I shouldn’t have an issue giving it out to the “needy” but as I said above I am not for giving money to those that can’t even put forth the efforts to help themselves and better themselves. I believe it is just an endless cycle that has no regulation, that has no checks or balances, and the government just lets it run freely and the people who use the system just take advantage of it, and again just perpetuates the cycle.

I would rather help someone out with the knowledge I have, than my wallet. I am more than willing to help someone out with a computer issue, or help someone out moving, or fix a door, finish off a basement, or do a million other things than give out money. Hell I’d “borrow” money to someone in need, that I knew would return the money once they were back on their feet again.

I have nothing against Obama, I think he is a well educated man, well spoken, probably one of the best public speakers we have had in a long time, I love how in touch he is with technology, I truly think he is going off of what he believes, and understands exactly what he says, which I commend him for. I also can not stand Bush either.

I just can’t sit back though and agree with Obama’s views, and his agenda. Things like Universal Heath care, reduction of Nasa based programs, The US auto industry loan guarantees, or the “new energy for America” plan, or the infrastructure plans, the list goes on. Basically all of these plans (other than the Nasa plan) would cost money, and where does that money come from? In the form of taxes, on one hand he says he is against tax increases, and that he says that middle class families would see their income taxes cut, and that any family making a combined income of less than $250k not seeing an increase at all.

Universal health care is another hot topic. On one hand I am all for it, I personally would LOVE to see universal health care, however, not at the expense of my wallet (my damn greedy self again). If we were to implement universal heath care, then make it available to EVERYONE. I would gladly take the $500/month I currently pay in insurance contributions and turn around and put for that into a tax that helps contribute towards universal health care. However I am NOT for having to pay additional taxes to help fund the system, then also have to pay for my own insurance plan and not be able to qualify for universal health care. It basically would be double dipping, just doesn’t sound right to me.

With all of the plans Obama has put forth during his campaign, I just can’t see how we will never see a tax rate increase, I just can’t believe it. so like they say, actions speak louder than words, so in the case of Obama he’s got a lot of work cut out for him because he sure can put forth those words can’t he?

I know this post will probably cause a lot of people to go off the deep end, especially bleeding heart liberals out there, you know who you are, but I had to get this off my chest and get it over with. Time will tell and see how things go, but for now, I’ll sit in my greedy little corner of my world, and continue on hating politics, and ALL politicians for that matter.

some would say I am Microsoft myopic…..

So today on twitter there was a slew of comments about Media Center, some mostly commenting about posts from Paul Thurrott calls media center a “stink  bomb”  then Chris Lanier talks about how even Microsoft themselves are moving away from direct focus on Media Center and more focusing on getting content to the TV.

I then went over to Brent Evans site, Geek Tonic, where he posted up his feelings on the whole situation. Brent goes on to talk about how Media Center has tons of potential, and that, “Microsoft still has yet to tap into that potential”. Paul T says “Microsoft has lost their way and that they’ve just simply never made it (Media Center) work.”

As an “bleeding heart” Media Center user, I think it works great…. fantastic even. I would even say it is the best DVR solution out there in terms of ease of use, functionality, features, and looks.

When it comes to Media Center, I honestly wouldn’t have it any other way. I take that back, there are things I would change about it, however I would rather boast what it can currently do, and how someone no so tech savvy can use something like Media Center in their home.

Via Twitter Brent has asked me to “guest” blog on his website, and I just think I may have to take him up on that offer. I’ve been always meaning to do a series of write up’s about my home setup with Media Center, Windows Home Server, and how I use it in my every day life, features I use, how I use it, ect…

So maybe down the road here soon you might start to see some blog posts from me over at Geek Tonic. Until then feel free to comment on your thoughts about Media Center

Media Center rants and raves….

I agree with Chris L that Microsoft has severely dropped the ball when it comes to marketing and showing off the great features and capabilities of what you can do with media center, however I whole heartedly disagree with Thurott’s assessment of media center.

I just can’t see how Paul T can go there and say media center doesn’t work when he himself doesn’t even use one of its major features, TV tuning and DVRing.

The whole reason I use media center is for DVRing, its the #1 feature of media center I use. I have my main machine, my htpc directly connected to my projector setup in my basement, then I have two linksys extenders and an xbox 360 on other tv’s in my home to stream live TV but in my case mostly DVR’d TV.

I absolutely LOVE the feature of being able to start watching a tv show on one tv in my home, stop/pause it, shut everything down, and pick it back up later on a completely different tv in my house. Can’t do that with a cable co DVR.

#3 Now off to your points Mr. Geek, what do you mean by “multiple clients all with the same functionality and no need for synching etc. ” what do you mean by no need for syncing? I have NEVER needed to sync content as extenders don’t do that. they stream directly from the main PC or “server”, because that is basically what your pc running media center is, is a server that the extenders connect to.

I can sort of see the WHS concept, but honestly I am not really sure I’d want tuner cards and other devices in my WHS box, I want my storage solution to be as stable as it can possibly be, and we all know that pc’s with hardware like tuner cards are NOT always 100% stable, there is always something that can happen.

#4 I’d love to run SageTV but I am a sucker for a good looking, easy to use interface, but even with the theme changes I just can’t stand the look and feel of SageTV, Media Center is just too damn purdy ;) but I regress yes the way they did up their extenders is by far the best implementation I have seen to date, they did it right! But also ask yourself this, with all the Video Podcasts and other video sources out there, are you NOT able to find the video you want in a format that will work with the extender you have? I can tell you that I for one, can find everything I need without have to transcode, or change formats.

#5 will be (actually IS) fixed with windows 7, h.264/mpeg4 support is native support in windows 7, also m2ts support is also added so with Windows 7, and extenders you now have native mpeg4 and native m2ts support on the extenders.

#1 and #2 don’t really affect me, not really sure what sooo many peaple get freaked out by #2, becuase BTW DVR-MS and WTV extensions are NOT DRM’d for NTSC and ATSC recordings. That is one of the biggest mis-conceptions SageTV and others have about media center is that ALL recordings are DRM’d and frankly that is NOT true, not one bit. All DVR-MS and WTV are, are containers, like mkv is. They contain meta data as well as the video and surround sound audio file. Also with the updated TV pack, not ALL cable card recordings are DRM’d either. Also who cares of MCE is built into windows, i look at it as a good reason to make it more stable than anything else.

but in the end, what we’re really talking about is that Microsoft doesn’t show off meida center more, and show off its great features and capabilities.
